Understanding Chemical Hazard Labels: A Guide for Food & Beverage Employees

Every cleaning chemical in your facility comes with a label that’s doing more than identifying the product — it’s communicating exactly how to handle it safely. Under OSHA’s Hazard Communication Standard, those labels follow a globally consistent format (GHS) designed so any employee, on any shift, can recognize a hazard at a glance. Here’s how to read one.

The Five Required Elements

Every chemical label is required to include five pieces of information:

1. Product identifier — the name of the chemical, matching what’s on the safety data sheet (SDS).

2. Pictogram(s) — a red-bordered diamond with a black symbol on a white background, representing a specific hazard class. Up to eight standardized pictograms exist, covering hazards like flammability, corrosion, health hazards, and acute toxicity. A single label may carry more than one pictogram if the product presents multiple hazards.

3. Signal word — either “Danger” (more severe hazards) or “Warning” (less severe). Only one signal word appears per label, even if multiple hazards are present.

4. Hazard statement(s) — a standardized phrase describing the nature of the hazard, such as “causes severe skin burns” or “may cause respiratory irritation.”

5. Precautionary statement(s) — practical instructions: what protective equipment to wear, how to store the product, and what to do in case of exposure.

The label also identifies the supplier or manufacturer, so employees and safety managers know exactly who to contact with questions.

Why the Pictograms Matter on the Floor

In a fast-paced food or beverage production environment, employees don’t always have time to read a full SDS before grabbing a chemical. The pictogram system is designed to communicate risk in under a second — a flame means flammable, a corroded surface and hand means corrosive, an exclamation mark means irritant or less severe health hazard. Recognizing these symbols quickly is a core part of workplace safety training, and it’s one of the fastest ways to prevent an accidental mixing error, skin exposure, or improper storage decision.

Color-Coding: An Extra Layer Beyond GHS

Many manufacturers go a step further than the minimum GHS requirement by color-coding labels by hazard category or chemical function — for example, distinguishing sanitizers from degreasers from acid-based descalers at a glance. This isn’t required by OSHA, but it adds a practical layer of safety in facilities where employees may be moving quickly between tasks and containers, reducing the chance of grabbing the wrong product under time pressure.

Training Your Team to Actually Use the Label

A compliant label only works if employees are trained to read it. That means:

  • New hires learn the five label elements and what each pictogram represents before handling chemicals independently.
  • Labels are never removed, obscured, or left off secondary containers (a common violation when chemicals are transferred to spray bottles or buckets).
  • Employees know where the corresponding SDS is kept and how to access it quickly.
